If you’re at the point where you’re ready to move, you have a lot of things to do before you can actually undergo the process. Today I’ll share three tips to help you make your next move a smooth and stress-free transition.

1. Declutter. This can even go as far as sorting between the things you want to save, recycle, donate, or trash. The more you do now, the less you’ll have to do later.

2. Set aside a “day of move” box. This box should contain things that you’re going to need, such as hammers, tools, sheets, and personal items. Pack it like you’re going on vacation; make sure you have enough clothes and personal effects for three or four days and don’t forget to bring a shower curtain!

“A good rule of thumb: the heavier the item, the smaller the box.”

3. Organize and label boxes as you pack them. You’re probably not going to remember what’s in each box, so be sure to label boxes not just with the room they go in but also with what’s in them. It might also be helpful to color code boxes by room or whose stuff is in them, as well as a checklist to make sure that everything is organized and accounted for.

When it comes to unpacking, one thing we tried during a move was lining up all of our boxes in the garage and bringing them in one at a time to unpack. That way, we weren’t overwhelmed by having a mountain of stuff to deal with.

As a final tip, remember to pack all your boxes to the very top. It’s worth it to spend a little money on bubble wrap or packing paper so that the contents don’t shift around during the move. A good rule of thumb: the heavier the item, the smaller the box.
